L. Thorne McCarty is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Law at Rutgers University. His interdisciplinary work bridges artificial intelligence (AI) and legal theory, focusing on the computational representation of legal concepts and reasoning.

McCarty has made significant contributions to AI and law, particularly in knowledge representation, natural language processing, and machine learning. His research includes the development of the "Language for Legal Discourse" (LLD), a logic programming language designed to model legal reasoning and discourse.

He has also taught Contracts and Intellectual Property Law and, in the computer science department, his teaching included Artificial Intelligence, both undergraduate and graduate, and also Discrete Mathematics and Principles of Programming Languages.

McCarty's interdisciplinary approach has advanced the understanding of how AI can be applied to legal reasoning, influencing both academic research and practical applications in legal technology.
