Top SEO Tips for Blogging

Following on from my recent social media for lawyers and students seminars (see here for the TANQ seminar and here for the Strathclyde University seminar), I was invited by cold case blogger extraordinaire, Vidster of Defrosting Cold Cases for a live tweeting session on 7 December 2012. The subject of the hour-long tweeting session was how to improve your blogging and SEO results. seo tips for blogging

Vidster lives in the USA so things kicked off at 12noon EST (5pm GMT).  And the new hashtag for this one and future cold case live tweeting sessions was #crimechat instead of the usual #cclivechat. For my previous live tweeting sessions with Vidster please see the following:-

The live tweets are collated below and can also be found on Vidster’s blog post “Gavin’s tips to improve your blogging and SEO results!“. Vidster very kindly said at the end of the tweeting:- “Thank you for one of the most enlightening chats and I mean it. If you are tech-challenged, a lot is abracadabra!”

Top 10 SEO Tips for Blogging

During the tweeting I rattled out some of my top tips for getting the most for SEO from your blogging efforts. They are as follows:-

  1. Think about the main keywords you are targeting
  2. Stick to the niche topic of your blog – don’t stray too far
  3. Choose blog post headings that have keywords AND that will get shared socially
  4. Link to your other blog posts and try to attract links from other bloggers
  5. Choose a good category name and a few relevant tags for each blog post
  6. Write with keywords in mind, BUT keep it readable and don’t stuff keywords
  7. Use heading tags (H1, H2, H3) with relevant keywords in your blog posts
  8. Publish images (e.g. Flickr’s creative commons) and include relevant alt tags
  9. Plan ahead, schedule posts and write consistently, not just every now and then.
  10. Guest blog e.g. on @YouBlawg www.youblawg.com and invite guest bloggers
