How to write a first class dissertation: Foreword

As promised in my recent YouTube video on YoublawG, my honours dissertation shall be published here in separate stages. As with all good presentations, you need an introduction. Here goes…

Centred on a narrow topic of international private law and human rights, this dissertation received a first class honours award from the University of Glasgow in 2007 under Dr Janeen Carruthers and Professor Elizabeth Crawford, and was verified externally by Professor Richard Fentiman of Cambridge University. While, yes, an amended part of it was published in the Juridical Review, the Journal of the Scottish Universities, by Greens in 2008, this is the original full 11,000 word dissertation complete with footnotes.

Not only shall this be published in full for free, it shall come with brief “tutor’s notes” or tips for you writing your own dissertation, which, it is hoped, will be of particular use to law students both in Scotland and, thanks to Google Translation, throughout the world.

The title of my dissertation was “Protection of the Right to a Fair Trial and Civil Jurisdiction: Permitting Delay, Restricting Access and Recognising Incompatible Judgments”. While you might not understand fully the ideas and technical legalese discussed, it is more important that you grasp the structure and reasoning as to why it is written in the way that it is.
